 KNX Answers Today's Building Challenges*

Convenience, Safety, Energy savings: The demand for building management systems is continuously increasing.

Whether it is Lighting, Blinds & Shutters, Security Systems, Energy Management, HVAC Systems, Monitoring Systems, Remote control, Metering, Audio/Video Control.

Whether in a single-family house or in an office complex, the demand for comfort and versatility in the management of air-conditioning, lighting and access control systems is growing. At the same time, the efficient use of energy is becoming increasingly important. More convenience and safety coupled with lower energy consumption can however only be achieved by intelligent control and monitoring of all products involved. This however implies more wiring, running from the sensors and actuators to the control and monitoring centers. Such a mass of wiring in turn means higher design and installation effort, increased fire risk and soaring costs.

The Answer is KNX – the World’s Open STANDARD for Home and Building Control.

In order to transfer control data to all building management components, a system is required that does away with the problems of isolated devices by ensuring that all components communicate via one common language: in short, a system such as the manufacturer and application domains independent KNX Bus. This standard is based upon more than 15 years of experience in the market, amongest others with predecessor systems to KNX: EIB, EHS and BatiBUS. Via the KNX medium to which all bus devices are connected (twisted pair, radio frequency, power line or IP/Ethernet), they are able to exchange information. Bus devices can either be sensors or actuators needed for the control of building management equipments. Almost all of building functions can be controlled, monitored and signaled via a uniform system without the need for extra control centers. That is KNX.

 Life Time Offer!*

A System that maintains its Value:

KNX is the only system that complies with the requirements of the European (EN50090) and the International (ISO/IEC 14543) standards for Home Automation. This conformity confirms the quality and value of the KNX technology. It serves as a token of quality for building owners. KNX is an open, expandable and therefore user-friendly system. It is already prepared for next-Generation products.

An open System:

KNX gives you free product choice: More than 100 manufacturers offer a variety of KNX-certified and compatible products according to the latest technical standards, giving you full freedom of choice.

Built today for your tomorrow’s Needs:

Stay independent even when of age. Even if you are disabled you can continue to live independently in your home with KNX. When you chose KNX you will make your wishes reality. It is your ‘old-age’ insurance for safe barrier-free living . If required you can always easily expand the system – for example add an emergency call or a house monitoring option.

 KNX Is Green!*

There is Reduced Energy consumption by using home and building control systems

Studies revealed by the KNX Association show how networked home and building control based on KNX allows up to 50% energy savings.

Climate change and ever-depleting resources mean that efficient energy use is a key social issue. As they account for 40% of total energy consumption, buildings represent considerable energy saving potential. KNX meets the requirements of the top Energy Performance Class for building automation meaning it is ideally suited to fulfilling the tighter energy consumption requirements for buildings. Through intelligent control of building system technology with KNX, the energy consumption of a building can be halved.

Intelligent control of building systems reduces energy consumption and the associated operating costs many times over - this is the conclusion reached by the Institute for Building and Energy Systems at Biberach University of Applied Sciences, Germany. This follows extensive research into the potential energy savings that can be achieved using modern electrical installation systems such as KNX.

It sums up its results as follows:

“Particularly automation functions, which present a high degree of energy-saving potential by combining various individual trades, can today only be achieved using modern building system technology based on bus and communication systems.”

Another research project, conducted at Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Energy saving with KNX based on the shows the extent to which energy savings example of heating energy (source: can be achieved. The newly constructed Bremen University of Applied Sciences) Centre for Informatics and media Technologies (ZIMT) has been fitted with KNX controls and equipment for regulating heating and lighting. The data collected has been evaluated, and comparisons made between “normal” operation and “automation” mode. The building has a specific energy consumption of 60-75 kWh/m2a. Two identical classrooms were selected as test rooms. One was fitted with a conventional installation, and the second with KNX control.

Based on a four-year series of measurements, the use of KNX control was found to reduce energy consumption by an impressive 50%. It is thus clear that the expenditure in building automation system has quick payback. Bremen University of Applied Sciences calculated that, with an annual energy consumption of 230,000 kWh for lighting alone, the investment would pay itself back after just one year with a KNX bus control. Ultimately it is not just the owners/operators and investors who benefit from the reduced energy consumption: the climate does as well.

In summary, KNX allows the following energy savings to be made:

up to 40% with KNX shutter control
up to 50% with KNX single room control
up to 60% with KNX lighting control
up to 60% with KNX ventilation control

Successful KNX National Group Workshop in London

KNX has just celebrated its annual Workshop with the KNX National Groups. 17 KNX National Groups, five of them new coming from Norway, Poland, Portugal, Finland and China, met at Heathrow Airport in London (United Kingdom). The target of the meeting was to share experiences with the promotion of KNX between all National Groups. A lot of new ideas were put forward by the different delegates. It was thus very enthusiastic to enjoy what all KNX National Groups have achieved so far. This will certainly have a positive effect: the worldwide success of KNX. For the next year the meeting will be hold in Lisbon (Portugal).

The newest National Group: KNX Portugal

The founding of KNX Portugal took place at a meeting in September 2008, during which all KNX Members agreed to the creation of a new KNX National Group. Activities are due to begin soon. In the meantime, if you need to contact the national group, Ms Carla Brito may be reached at carla.brito@siemens.com. For further information you may also visit the website http://www.knxportugal.com

KNX Has Arrived in America

North American building automation market has until now been “a little far away“ from the KNX technology. But now, with the recent introduction of AMX (no 1 audio company worldwide) and Russound ( no 1 audio company in the US market) as a member to KNX Association, the United States market will see more of KNX technology in the upcoming years. Introducing KNX technology to the US market, Siemens, WHD Audio and Next System Technology will be remembered as the pioneers. And KNX will increase its market presence and eventually become a leading technology in the United States as it did in the rest of the world.

The successful foundation of KNX China

The founding meeting of KNX China took place on the 22nd of July, 2008. The event was held in ITEI, Beijing. Mrs Yin Bo (Siemens) was elected for President and the secretarial is supported by Mrs Shen Pu (ITEI). The web address is not still available but it will be soon. In any case if you need to contact them, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail to (Mrs Shen Pu) ism@tc124.com
